That's How It Should Be

The DSMA blog carnival topic for May is "I wish my insurance company paid for __________ because ________."

I'm going to go a different direction with this prompt.  I'm not going to fill in the sentence.  Why?  Because I have incredible health insurance.

I've written about health insurance before.  This is far and away the best health insurance I've ever had.  Hands down.  Yes, it's still expensive, but I've yet to have anything rejected that I've asked for.  When I first got my CGM, it was approved in two hours.  They cover the new VerioIQ strips.

For the first time, I don't feel punished for having a chronic condition.  I never want to leave this insurance, ever!

So my wish?  My wish is for everyone to have health insurance as good as mine.  Because that's how it should be.  We have a chronic condition, and do not deserve to be punished for it.  I firmly believe that.  Yet that's how a lot of insurance companies make people feel.  I know I've felt that way before.

People with any chronic condition, diabetes or otherwise, should have access to any and all care and tools available to take care of themselves.  Without going bankrupt in the process.  Period.  End of discussion.

I really wish I had a magic wand I could wave to make this happen.

  1. Congrats on the awesome insurance, Jess!!! This is very great to hear. I've felt that before, too, going from not-so-good to great. And then sadly, back down a couple notches. Here's to hoping your insurance remains outstanding far into the future and nothing changes! Thanks for sharing this different perspective - I like it!!! Now, we just need one of those fantasy diabetes devices that could transport your insurance coverage to everyone who needs/wants it... (see what I did there?!) :))

  2. Our insurance was great in 2011 (diagnosis year) but this year got a tiny skootch worse. I can't help but worry each year we will have less and less and less coverage. Also: how will my nutty nine year old son ever get a job? With insurance coverage? Therefore I shall live forever.

    Also, how can Blue Cross stand us? We are a huge drain. Their job is to make money. We are not helping.

    Would your insurance pay for Latisse? (Eyelash growing ointment.)

  3. I recently had to stop and reevaluate why I was complaining about our insurance. Our coverage is fantastic, and I need to be grateful for that.

    When you say that you don't feel punished for having a chronic condition is when I remember why I was complaining. It's not the coverage that bugs me about my insurance, but the hassles I have to go through to get them to cover an annual visit to the GYN or the bad attitudes that I get when I call their customer service lines. Even if other insurance plans can't copy the awesomeness of your plan's coverage, it'd be great if they could all have the courtesy to use the Golden Rule.
